The famous colonial clubs - the Bengal Club, the Calcutta Club - were in decay, and Indian now moved in rooms once closed to them. Decay within, decay without: Calcutta in some places had a little of the feel of an abandoned Belgian settlement in central Africa in the 1960s, after Africans had moved in and camped. Camped: it was the word.
