mp3: Aloha - Light Works
I am synched up to my friend on the other coast as we coast through this paper and I just finished The Square and I just read the first of John Berryman's Dream Songs cycle and here right now I want to kill pitchfork for not covering Aloha's new EP "Light Works". Aloha destroyed me in June with Brace Your Face, it was brutal on the mad-crazy alternating your life away to a free-deathbound-way. Things changed. But here they are trying to sell themselves out straight on the indie rockdom with very acoustic, very jammy ta-da ta-da ta-da overload. But it's good because it's bracing me away from the face that had the empty box of wine on it turned upside down. I love the earnestness in their sound.

mp3: A.A. Bondy: Vice Rag
Vice Rag
The cover art for the album is beautiful. It has a look of a cave painting. Symbols and shapes are all too familiar but they seem like a trick to a larger inherently unknowable hieroglyph that is hidden under it.

mp3: Destroyer's nyc song...
New tune from New Porno's album.
Has an interesting guitar chorus at the end which started to make sense at the fourth listen. Last two lines are pure indestructible genius!

mp3: Patrick Watson - Great Escape
Patrick Watson - Great Escape.mp3
Bad day, looking for a way
Oh, looking for the great escape
Gets in his car and drives away
Far from all the things that we are
Puts on a smile and breaths it in and breaths it out
He says bye-bye, bye to all of the noise
Oh he says bye-bye bye to all of the noise
Hey child, things are looking down,
That’s OK you don’t need to win anyways
Don’t be afraid just eat up all the gray
and it will fade away
Don’t let yourself fall down
Bad day, looking for the great escape
He says bad day, looking for the great escape
On a bad day, looking for the great escape
Great escape

mp3: Destroyer - The Spirit Of Giving
Destroyer - The Spirit of Giving
This is an earlier song by Destroyer, almost sounds like an afterthought, post-melodic. The superband, The New Pornographers where Destroyer does his other apprenticeship are going to release it as the closing track on their forthcoming album so I am dreading, this turning into some massive egotistically complex, layered guitar-chorus laden monster. But so far, it is giving out the right vibes. Melancholic, perhaps a little bit.

mp3: Sufjan Stevens - "Come on! Feel the IIlinoise!"
I have always been kind of confused about Sufjan's brand of "pop" and his weaving of mythologies, like there is something ungenuine about it: plastic, synthetic and safe. But somehow, well, yes, somehow this tune is on my playlist for a day or two now. He references The Cure's "Close to me" in an interesting way, here. Plus, the second part gets darkly biblical in subject matter.

mp3: Jackie, Dressed In Cobras - The New Pornographers
Looking at the stuff, I had, today on this computer to burn a new cd that I promised to Ava for the coffeeshop music project. And I dug out the New Pornos' tune which was actually the indestructible Dan Bejar's work with the New Porno crew mostly providing a chorus line (Neko Case is the most prominent). Dan Bejar is crazy, his words reminded me of Rebecca's dream.
The New Pornographers - Jackie, Dressed In Cobras
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Look we've seen this kind of thing before.
Jackie flirts with cobras at the door.
Dont live your life inside an arrow filled with glances
New York's sick, you've had your chances,
Yes you've had 'em. Yes you've had 'em. Yes you've had 'em.
On a train devouring the land,
theres a kid going insane over her man,
insane over her man, insane over her.
Look, we've seen this kind of thing before,
Orchids hanging from the Reverend's door,
and if he hollers, let him out 'cause gonna shout.
See, something in the way she moves just shouldnt be allowed.
Wrecked on the jungle floor, Jackie's dressed in cobras,
giving me ideas. What I really need now is ideas.
Look, we've seen this kind of thing before.
Vampires drawn across the ballroom floor.
Mistake this bloodlust feast for dancing.
You felt sick. You've had your chances,
Yes you've had 'em. Yes you've had 'em. Yes you've had 'em.
On a train devouring the land,
theres a kid going insane over her man,
insane over her man, insane over her.
On a train devouring the land,
theres a kid going insane over her man,
insane over her man, insane over her.
On a train devouring the land,
theres a kid going insane over her man,
insane over her man, insane over her.
Wrecked on the jungle floor, Jackie's dressed in cobras,
giving me ideas. What I really need now is ideas.

Aloha - Brace Your Face
This song reminds me of ol' pink floyd and king crimson - the so-called prog-rockisms are littered here aplenty. There was a subtle shift of tempo halfway through the tune and that got me hooked.

Guns Of Brixton - Nouvelle Vague's interesting spin.
Guns Of Brixton - The Clash cover and Forest - The Cure cover by Nouvelle Vague
How things pop up sometime? I looked into this French ensemble band the day I was going to go hang out with Chrissy, Devin and the gang in NYC in March. And it felt like the kind of music I wanna listen to right now. They had done a curious sounding cover of The Cure's - Forest which is kind of loungy (and so it works!), so different from the original yet steer itself very close to the essence of that five minute pop-song.
Another very good example of Nouvelle Vague's unique spin is The Clash's Guns of Brixton. I am not sure about the vocalist Camille who guested for this take but it is pretty good! The song itself would have fit right in Jean Genet's "Notre-Dame Des-Fleurs" as the soundtrack of life for our Lady of the Flowers.
Guns of Brixton
When they kick at your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun
When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting on death row
You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of Brixton
The money feels good
And your life you like it well
But surely your time will come
As in heaven, as in hell
You see, he feels like Ivan
Born under the Brixton sun
His game is called survivin'
At the end of the harder they come
You know it means no mercy
They caught him with a gun
No need for the Black Maria
Goodbye to the Brixton sun
You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of Brixton
When they kick at your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun
You can crush us
You can bruise us
Yes, even shoot us
But oh-the guns of Brixton
Shot down on the pavement
Waiting in death row
His game is called survivin'
As in heaven as in hell
You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of Brixton
