The Falange's paradoxical ideology reveals the true
strength of the centralist-authoritarian mentality of
traditional Spain. Falangism (like fasicsm and nazism)
made much of its socialist pretensions. Jose Antonio
attacked the 'social bankruptcy of capitalism' and
recognized the suffering of workers and peasants. He
understood their turning towards Marxism. But Marxism
was not Spanish. 'A socialist victory has the significance
of a foreign invasion', he wrote in a letter to Franco.
Marxism advocated class war which would weaken the
nation. To avoid that, the country must be forcibly united
in a system in which the employer could no longer exploit
the worker, nor the worker fight the employer. This
suppression of strife was the only way to make Spain great
again. Jose Antonio expressed it thus: 'Fascism is a
universal attitude of self-recovery.'
