With confidence in their military power and with
Robert Clive establishing his reputation as a general
commanding the English army in wars of Arcot and
Shrirangam, the English continued to spread their
dominance over the French in all areas where the
latter had some influence. During the seven years'
war (1756-630 between England and France in
Europe, the English registered victory after victory
over the French in India occupying Chandannagore in
Bengal (1756), Pondicherry (1761) and other French
areas in India by 1763. On a treaty reached between
England and French in 1763, the French areas were
returned but the French no longer were a power to reckon
in India.
