In the past, political parties had observed special days by organizing hartals, taking out processions and holding meetings. The League's "Direct Action Day" seemed to be of a different type. In Calcutta, I found a general feeling that, on 16 August, the Moslem League would attack Congressmen and loot Congress property. Further panic was created when the Bengal Government decided to declare 16 August a public holiday.
